Network Errors on bootup
I'm new to Linux. Have programmed a lot of AIX client/server programs over the years, but never got into the "admin" end of Unix. I've setup an openSUSE 10.3 PC. Had the network interface all working until I tried to setup a network printer. Now the network interface appears to be broken. Getting the following error from the boot.msg log:
doneSetting up network interfaces: lo lo IP address: 127.0.0.1/8 Checking for network time protocol daemon (NTPD): unused done eth0 device: Accton Technology Corporation SMC2-1211TX (rev 10) eth0 IP address: 192.168.1.2/24 Checking for network time protocol daemon (NTPD): unused doneWaiting for mandatory devices: eth0_new __NSC__ 12 11 10 9 6 5 4 3 1 0 eth0_new No interface found failedSetting up service network . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .failed |
Hi,
And welcome to LQ! Can you please post the output of lspci and lsmod here? And when you were setting up the network printer - what exactly did you do? Cheers, Tink |
Network error on bootup
Thanks for replying so rapidily.
Let me give you a little more information. I have a small home based network. I use a Linksys Wireless Router, Linksys 5 port switch, Linksys Printer Server, and a Linksys Cable modem. The router is handling all IP assigments via DHCP. I have assigned the openSuse server a static IP and have modified the /etc/host file and the Windows network host files with all the specific host names and IP addresses. (I am writing some client/server apps and want the Linux box to run all server based apps). I first tried to install the network printer via the Yast interface. It was unable to resolve the IP address of the Printer Server. So I switched to the KDE Personal Settings / Peripherals / Add Printer dialogs. I used the Administrator Mode option. It resolved the IP address immediately. It asked to test the printer so I did. It sent a file to my Samsung Laser printer which the printer received, but error'd out trying to print. So I canceled the printer setup and went to the Samsung web site, (via the Linux box), to see if they had a more up-to-date driver. The Firefox browser would not navigate to the drivers page successfully so I shut the machine down for the evening. When I started the machine back up it no longer could access the network, period. Not even the Linksys router. I can ping the Linux box host name but cannot get passed the NIC. Network Errors on Bootup
Tinkster,
I feel really stupid. I found and fixed the problem. The Linux box is networked through the Linksys Printer Server and this device has a nasty habit of losing it's network connection. To restart it you just unplug the power cable and plug it back in. Sorry for the trouble and thank you very much for the rapid response. Brad |
