What are your setup?
Are you using DHCP or static addressing?
Do you try to set multiple IP addresses on a single NIC?

I'm not sure, but your error message makes it sound like you don't have your network card itself configured yet. You can't set up your network until your system can use your network card. What network card do you have, and what have you done to set it up?
Please post the output of the following commands (run them as root):
lspci
pnpdump
lsmod

I am using a dual boot setup with win98. My n/w card is working fine with win98. When I am booting up it shows only lo.
What should I do.
I tried for netconfig static IP addressing, but still it does not work.
Thanking you

You need to load drivers for your network card before you can use it. Please tell me what kind of network card you have and what Linux distribution you are running so I can tell you how to do this.
