Network Card issue on Fedora Core 1

Sorry for the dubble post. I am a complete linux noob, and am now clensing my self of the evil Mr Gates has been drowning me in for so long. Anyway, I have 2 network cards, which I want both working, but I can only get one to work. It is a 3com integrated network card. Model is 3C940. I have downloaded the driver for it, extracted it, and then used "make load" It then says to use ifconfig eth0 up (it notes "You may have to substitue 'eth0' for your actual interface if you have
more than one ethernet NIC installed." so since i knew eth0, and eth1 were taken, i tried 2) after that didnt seem to do anyting, i tried eth1, and eth0. those both did nothing. Help?

Once the kernel module is loaded, any devices it recognizes in your system will be initialized and 'ifconfig -a' will show it.

If the two devices use different modules, then the first module loaded will get eth0. The second module will get eth1.

You can also watch the kernel messages as the modules are loading to see what it is doing. Simple unload the module, run 'tail -f /var/log/messages &' and then load the modules. The 'tail' command will be running in the background and you'll see the system messages printed to your terminal. You should see which interface is used by the kernel module. When you want to stop the messages, simply run 'kill %1'.
