Netscape as user
 

I am using DSL. rp-pppoe-3.5. Login as root. Start Netscape from desktop, can surf, email, etc. just fine. Login as user, get "Netscape is unable to find....."
I figure it has something to do with permissions, but permissions for what?
Slackware 9.0.

Sounds too me like you have got the netscape installed in your root account, but not your user account.

Either that or you need to change your permissions to rwxrwxrwx so root, user and group can use it!

I'm probably wrong, but then again, I'm rubbish at this linux lark:D

Permissions for Netscape, pppd, pppoe, adsl-start, adsl-connect are all -rwxr-xr-x

Sounds to me more like a $PATH thing.

Can you finish that error message? Or is that all it prints:
Netscape is unable to find....

If there is an application after it, what is the location of that application (or set of applications)?

And can you post up:
echo $PATH

It's just Netscape is unable to find www.<any site>.com.

I'll check the path tonight when I get home. Is the user's path different than root's path?

Yes, usually.

However, if root's able to find sites, I don't see why users shouldn't be able to. All the ideas that I can think of (I typed em out them realized) would happen to both root and users.

Do you have to do anything real strange when connecting as root? I'm not too familiar with rp-pppoe, but can you set it up as root, then login as a user and surf?

No. With rp-pppoe, you have to bring up the adsl connection as root.
So, if I login as root, do adsl-start, then start Netscape <or lynx, etc> everything works fine.
If I login as user, su, do adsl-start, etc., the browser opens but I can't find anything.

In both cases I get the message "Connected!" after adsl-start.

Try another browser like mozilla or opera and see if you get the same problem. Try and install mozilla opera into the same parent directory as netscape.

What if you login as root, do the thing, then CTRL ALT F2 to a console, login as user and then use lynx, does it connect?

It doesn't matter which browser I use, Mozilla, Netscape, Lynx, Links, <haven't tried Opera>, I get the same results. Works fine as root. Can't surf as user.

Not sure if I tried it that way yet. I'll do that when I get home tonight.

Um. I might not be reading this wrong. Are you behind a proxy? Have you just configured your proxy for root only?

No proxy, but a firewall. Could this be it?

Yes, it could be.

I had to mess around with my firewall until I got it right i.e. mandrake default is "shorewall", and it was a total pain in the arse, since then I have tried firestarter and guard dog.

You should take a looksee at the ports that you have got open. If, for example, you have the firewall config'd as user, but not as root, then the result would be the same as having the netscape installed as root and not in your user account, and not be able to connect.

If you got the firewall set up for root and user, then make sure you use the same settings for both account - that would then exclude the firewall, if it allows you to connect of course...........

ha, just thought, if your system shows connected with both root and user, but won't access remote servers, then surey, it must be a firewalling problem.

And I'm still rubbish at this linux thing!!!:D
