Netgear wireless card challenge
 

I just picked up a Netgear WG511 card (http://www.netgear.com/products/details/WG511.php) and I'm trying to get it working with my install of RH EL 3. Is there a Linux driver for this? If not, is there an alternative to using the NDISWrapper? Thanks in advance.

Sorry about that. I set up one of those under Ubuntu for a friend on mine-- it wasn't fun. As far as I know, NDISWrapper is just about the only way to go about getting that up and running in linux. The problem I had with that, is that the windows .inf driver file is damn hard to find for that card.

If I remember correctly, I had to use the driver CD that came with the card and extract the .inf file from the .cab files somewhere on the cd. I'm sorry I can't be more specific, it was several months and 1000 miles ago that I did this. Just browse around the CD until you find a .ca files and try them all. Good luck.

Now, I think that these particular .cab files are InstallShield .cab files. in that case you will need to use the 'unshield' program to extract them. That source package can be found here: unshield Sourceforge page

Thanks, Harpune, that's in line with a lot of the information I've found about this card and Linux. The card was on sale :) ... Anyway, the small number of drivers available with this distro don't include many for wireless cards. Oh well, looks like I'll be doing this the hard way.

Red Hat EL 3 compatible wireless cards?
 

I may just give this card to my wife for her XP laptop and look for a compatible card. Can anyone suggest on that's compatible with my distro (RH EL3) before I get into tyring to configure anything with the ndiswrapper? Yes, I've already checked the HCL on this site, which might be improved by the ability to search/sort by distro. Thanks in advance.

Ndiswrapper is fine to configure if you follow the guide on their wiki, and as far as i can tell the driver for v1 of the card is in the kernel, so it shouldn't be hard to recompile it (there are plenty of guides out there)
Also, have you checked what version it is?
