need widescreen resolution help!

Hello, I am definitely to be considered a n00b when it comes to Linux, so I'd appreciate your help, if such you can render.

I have a Sony Widescreen LCD that runs at a max or "native" resolution of 1280x768. Needless to say, Windows works flawlessly on it, and I love the extra space to read. On the other hand, Linux does not support it "out of the box". I am fine with that, but I still hate the black boxes on both sides of my screen. I want to eleminate them if possible.

I am using CentOS 4 final x86_64 on a 3000+ AMD64 with a Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB. So far, I've edited the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file a dozen times, each attempt failing to fix this "problem". I've used Modeline generators, the "gtf" command, and excaped refugee high artists, and none of them have worked. Once, it did seem to have the proper resolution, but all I could see was the middle section of the screen, which is the same area as if I were in 1024x768. I naturally didn't like that and did something else that screwed up the conf file, so now I'm going off command prompt.

Any suggestions?
