Need to update bios, and motherboard drivers.... using KNOPPIX with no internal HD

Does anyone know if this can be done?

Btw my name is Marcus, and I am a recovering Window-a-holic...

Check with your motherboard manufacturer's web site. Many machines have the ability to update the BIOS from a floppy, if you hold a specific key during boot (for example).

I can't think of any reason why this shouldn't be possible, but there still needs to be a copy of any BIOS file that the system can "see" so that it knows where to get the actual update/upgrade from to be able to "apply" the update.

John

Be very careful doing this. Some manufacturers like MSI offer a Internet based bios update. The standard method has always been to download the bios software and place it on a floppy. Boot the system with a generic boot disk and then execute the bios software from the floppy. This is where it becomes dangerous. Most modern floppies are very poor quality and if the system has a problem reading the floppy during a bios flash that is effectively the end of your motherboard. New bios chips are difficult to get and can be very expensive. I personally recommend burning the flash files to a cd and working off a cd.

I've done the floppy update several times - never had an issue.
However like TigerOC, I don't trust floppies, and always make sure I have the original CD (with the original BIOS code) handy just in case.
Done the Internet flash as well (ASUS), but only from Windows and IE. I don't trust any of them to be standards compliant.
