Hydrurga,

Thanks for your help.

I rebooted VM from CD as you suggested. The only option seemed to be to reinstall linux which I cancelled.

What am I missing?

Did you point VMWare at the GParted Live ISO instead of the install ISO? (i.e. the equivalent of the real-world putting a different CD in the drive)
