Question Need to know about the mail server

Hi All
As I am new to Linux,I want to ask a question which might seem to be simple, however I have little doubt.I want to know that by default do we need to configure SMTP and POP3/IMAP sever for sending and receiving mails in Linux server and client machines or we can directly send and receive mails without configuring these mail servers?
Please help me with my doubt.

It depends on what you have installed and what distribution you're using. For sending and receiving emails you assuredly do not need to setup a pop3/imap server, however there are some benefits to setting up a smtp server locally for certain configurations. If you're using say, thunderbird you absolutely need neither smtp or imap/pop3 servers.
