Need to disable GUI in Suse 10.1

I'm a relative newcomer to Linux, so bear with me with what might seem like an odd request.

I need to have a laptop running SUSE 10.1 not show a GUI login, just a command prompt. Please don't ask why, it's not my call. I have edited the inittab file to 3 instead of 5 but if I do that then the DHCP service fails. In YAST System/runlevel settings, dhcpd is set to run at 3 and 5, so I have no idea what is going on. Why would dhcpd fail in this instance?

Maybe. SUSE used kdm the last time I tried it years ago. Removing the executable bit should be enough to stop kdm/xdm. Try

Code:
# chmod -x /path/to/kdm
You can type "which kdm" to find the location. If all else fails, you can always kill X after boot with ctrl+alt+backspace.
