need questions answered about nvidia and modules

i was having problems using the correct GLX module for whatever reason, which i still don't know why of ether.

i need help sorting things out, and i have many questions which i haven't found the answer to yet...

in my xorg.conf, there are many modules that are supposed to load.

they are -->
"dbe"
"extmod"
"type1"
"freetype"
"glx"

in my x log files, some of them are having issues being found and loading up, specifically type1 and glx

i have a nvidia geforce4 mx 4000
i'm using the 96xx drivers, kmod, etc

i got them from the rpm fusion repo.

---------------
the long story (skip down for the questions if you want)
---------------

in the beginning, when i used my nVidia display settings (the one where you can see lots of details and edit settings and click a button that says to X configuration file. and it lets you preview and edit changes if you want to..etc

anyway.. after using that, it changes (i think???) my xorg.conf on reboot (which is strange because i don't use root user to run that prog, and somehow it managed to change my xorg.conf, which is owned by root, and hmm doesn't that violate some kind of authority/user privileges/etc ...actually i don't remember for sure if it changes it or not...)

and so after the settings are in place, i reboot and then im able to launch X and log in as usual, and upon hitting enter after typing in my password, x crashes and sets me back to the "normal graphical login" and i can do this endlessly...

so looking at the x log i can see that a glx module is causing the problem, that is should be my nVidia module and not the "X.Org Foundation" version.
so i check the path it's using and yup, it's using the wrong files. and for whatever reason. the real nvidia files are in a sub folder with a link pointing to the correct file and so on.

so i made backup copy of the original shared object libglx.so
and i coped the nvidia one over top of it. and even made a shell script for root user to undo it if i have to later...

annddd now everything seems to work. the x log files show that the correct glx module is being used. and my 3d hardware acceleration is working now ( i think. it seems to be working anyway)

but i wonder because the rest of the modules all say "X.Org Foundation"

and also the type1 module doesn't seem to exist on my pc according to the x.org log files

------------ question section ---------------

soo where should the module for type1 ought to be and how can i set my pc to load it up in it's proper place (rather than copying over something like i did with the glx module .. which i think can run me into problems later)

also, how do i tell what speed my agp card is running at, such as agp x1 or agp x2 or agp x4 etc, trying to check the bus speed to make sure the thing is really being accelerated like it should or if it's running at a speed it shouldn't...
the agp slot normally runs at x8 when it's configured properly.

and should all the modules be from nvidia and not from X.Org Foundation ? because i'm using mixed stuff at the moment and i don't know if that's okay.

1. type1 fonts have been replaced by freetype fonts. you can comment out or remove the "type1" line it is no longer needed.

2. For card speed you could try querying with nvclock.

3.

username@it-etch:~$ glxinfo | grep direct

Your system should say YES for direct rendering and identify the nvidia GLX module
glxinfo is part of hte mesa-utils packages

Troubleshooting Direct Rendering
Troubleshooting OpenGL

If you are still having problems, read Appendix C of the nvidia README file, for more information on the OpenGL Libraries and the nvidia driver.

Hope that answers your questions somewhat or points you to the info you need.
