need old school card for dsl
Hi,
I've been trying for several weeks to find a card that will work with dslinux. I have an old compaq 1220 laptop. I beieve it has the old style 16 bit pcmcia slot. Which needs a type II card. I have also read that it MUST be ne2000 compatible? Does anyone know of a highly recommended card? That will work with damn small linux? Or at least a chipset? I have put multiple things in the ebay search but have found too many mixed results. That is why I would like to be able to enter a brand name. I am looking for a wired ethernet card 10/100 baseT, preferably without a dongle? Many thanks as this has been quite frustrating. |
I have a Netgear FA411 that I use occasionally, it works very well under Linux. No annoying dongle to loose and no cheesy flip out connector to break either. I have done a full Arch network install using it and had no problems.

I am not the sure the current kernel in dsl, Do you think this card would be supported out of the box?

Linksys Etherfast 10/100 (PCM200) should work in Linux. I do not have any trouble with Linsys PCI and USB wired NICs.

cjae - take this for what its worth.
From my personal experience, using an older laptop (approx. 400Mhz), running linux, both 2.4.x & 2.6.x kernel, at the time I was using a 10base_T pcmcia NIC. I really don't think I could have been able to tell the difference between that and a 10/100. The speed was fine. If any glitches occured, they looked to be more of a video nature, then due to transfer speeds. It was a 3-com .... OK... after hitting my head on the desk for 2 minutes, I can't think of it. I'll post it tomorrow evening if you still would like the exact model number. -tw |
will almost all 3 com cards work as they seem to be the predominant on ebay.
