okay i see that this just eliminates the menu and will choose windows after the time runs out. is there any way to also change the length of the timer to something so low noone will notice their reboot is lagging?

i would agree with you except that my dad is angry with me about what i do to the computer already; i am blamed for all viruses/spam/slow cable/slow computing because of it. id rather avoid a conversation about why i wish to use linux, especially since id have to lie about why i really need linux.

i read it in its entirety, it was a good read. if your suggesting that i should be ashamed of myself for cracking, and maybe should redirect my skills to usefull things like hacking, your assuming i have skills, which i dont. while id like to learn how to program and do useful things, i know i would be terrible at it. i just downloaded someone elses crack and used it, and thats about the extent of my skills. if youd like to discuss my morals further, take it to pm's, but i feel no shame in hacking AA, for complicated reasons i do not care to waste your time with.

about the serial number bans, all i know is amongst the AA hacker community (or "cracker") running AA on linux is a successful workaround to HW bans.

That can be done with
Code:
timeout <seconds>
(Replace seconds with the amount of seconds to wait.)

I would really like to know what you're talking about.

because i download tons of crap on to the computer, i am blamed for all problems the computer has.

because the real reason i need linux is to avoid my HW ban, something i definitely can't tell my parents about.

The part you just explained.

That sounds logical to me. If you 'download tons of crap' on it, that migh just be the source of the problem. I don't really think this discussion is going to go anywhere, so let's focus on how the suggestions are working out for you. I guess where I was going with the side discussion was that Linux might not be the thing you're looking for. Not cheating might just be that thing. I remember being younger myself, and you might just regret your mannerisms and actions in the future. (I do all the time.)

P.S. Sorry, I don't mean to cause offense or a flamewar here, I just want to voice my opinion. Sorry if what I'm saying comes across the wrong way.

Exactly what I was trying to get this kid to figure out on his own. Personnally, I think that in light of the LQ rule,

we ought to ignore this kid. Essentially, the kid is asking us how to install Linux so he can fraudulently access web sites.

not exactly. i still need to put linux on the computer just to be able to play the game at all. i wont be using this to cheat some more. i used the hack a few times and then stopped using them, and didnt use them for a good month prior to being banned. noone knew i was hacking, i stopped on my own. so im not trying to put linux on this computer just to take advantage of punkbuster again, but rather just to be able to play fairly.

This thread should be reported to the admin for a user requesting help to crack software. This obviously doesn't fall into any "Fair Use" grey areas of copyright law.

you might not be doing it anymore. But you did hack and you are asking us to help you out with your hacking even though it s a month after you claim to have stopped. WE could just let you buy a new harddrive.

when did i ever ask for help hacking? im just looking for a little help with linux. and i have no intentions of hacking once i get linux working. if you can't help me, i will find help in other ways, not buy a new harddrive. i thank you for all the help you have given me wether or not you regret giving it to me. bye.

Wow, that was a long thread for a simple subject.

Anyway, here's my take:

You should probably consider your options a little closer. Contact Punkbuster and see what your options are, if they are human they might give you a second chance to use your existing OS with your existing hardware; explain that you stopped using the hack when they cut you off, and that you don't intend to use the hack again. A much simpler solution that installing linux for the soul purpose of playing AA, which I think you may find to be more work than you are considering, it's not windows at all.

As for installing Linux:
You can create an empty partition, throw any distribution you want on it, use either bootloader, including windows nt-loader, and boot either OS. The trick is to create the empty partition. The rest is done after you burn the install CD and boot with it (you have to boot with the CD in order to install to the empty partition you created). The rest is well documented all over the net.

Another option is to find an ISO of the Gentoo LiveCD that had America's Army on it, then there is no install required you just run boot from the CD, and it creates a live distribution that doesn't require an HD at all.

Lastly, about the cracking:
Discussions about cracking are not allowed on the forum. This is NOT a discussion on cracking directly, but you are using linux to circumvent; a form of cracking. This discussion isn't even about how to use Linux to do your circumventing, simply how to install Linux. So why give us all the details about cracking, banning, and lying to your parents? The point is that we want to foster an atmosphere that makes everyone feel comfortable; that feeling changed once it was determined what your ultimate intentions were/are. I'm going to close this thread because of it's ultimate intended purpose.

If you have issues with my decision, feel free to contact me or the Site Admin, Jeremy, directly through email.
