need hotplug info

I am running Ubuntu, but similar problems come from fedora or knoppix. Originally my problem was that whenever I tried using my pci video card it would make booting up Ubuntu hang on "starting hotplug subsystems." I went around the forums following various howtos for installing drivers and such, but nothing worked. I then found a faster bootup howto where I learned how to turn off hotplug all together, under this setting I was able to make my video card work. The problem with this though, is that nothing else will work like my sound or Internet. So my question is as a newbie how do I either configure everything hotplug does manually, or tell hotplug to completely ignore everything about my pci slots/video card since that works fine without it. Thanks

you can edit /etc/hotplug/blacklist to disable items from hotplug

Thanks that helps a lot, but now I have another question. Is there a list of modules or anything else hotplug configures, and/or any ideas on what all my video card would trigger because just typing in a few things like nvidia doesn't do the trick. Thanks again.
