That depends. What make/model of printer is it? What distribution are you running?

Where exactly are you seeing this message?

If your printer were not connected, then it certainly would not be able to tell you----anything!!!

What you see in a computer when attempting to run a printer is called the "print queue". This is a software setup which includes the driver and gives you the interface to the printer. For various reasons the actual interface can get lost---this simply means that the computer has lost track of where the printer is. Many such things are cured by simply turning the printer off and on again. In other cases, you have to "reinstall the printer", which means setup a new print queue.

The best printer setup utility is (IMHO) the CUPS web interface. Simply open a browser and enter "localhost:631".
Troubleshooting steps:
1. try a test page
2. try cycling the printer power, then the test page again.
3. If 1 and 2 fail, then delete the printer (queue) and re-install
