I am a newbie and have been playing around with redhat 9. I installed gaim v0.71 which went through fine until I started it and i said "could not load msn protocol". I have been searching for a solution for this situation. I initially compiled from source and then later tried to just load an rpm but it did not solve this problem. I upgraded mozilla from 1.2.1 to 1.5 and it still did not help. I ran across some saying that i have to compile gaim with "ssl enabled". How exactly can I do that. I just type "./configure" followed by make and make install.

Please help me install a msn working gaim.

i've been having a simular problem, it's because SSL isn't enabled properly.. i have both Mozilla and GNUTLS but i've had no luck getting it to connect to MSN properly.. Gaim 0.72cvs will load the protocol, but you would be unable to connect, if i find out anything, i'll post it ASAP

oh btw, gAIM mentioned something in their FAQ about problems with mozilla 1.5.

The last week i had the same problem... And I discover that since October 19th the MSN Messenger Service ONLY accepts request for Login from Clients that use MSNP9 (MSN Protocol 9) (Actually GAIM 0.72 support that)... And I resolve this problem Installing AMSN (Al's Messenger, It's a pretty nice CLONE of MSN Messenger http://amsn.sourceforge.net)... I explicit recommend that u Install the version 0.83 (Supports MSNP9)....

Actually I'm running Mandrake 9.1 on my Dell Inspiron 8100 Laptop...

it just came to my attention that you have to specify --enable-nss or --enable-gnutls at configure time
and also specify the directories where the libraries are at if they are not in /usr/local/mozilla-whatever
or /path/to/gnutls... on my slackware 9.0 box (with upgrade to mozilla 1.4), this seemed to work for me

./configure --enable-nss=yes

I tried the ./configure --enable-NSS=yes. Still the same "could not load msn protocol" problem. I am going to install gnuTLS and see what happens. AMSN is nice but i want to be able to use icq and yahoo at the same time as my MSN. I had it working fine on mandrake, but since i switched to redhat i am having this problem. Can anyone provide step by step instructions for this problem. Also, if i installed something by compiling the source (i.e. gaim), how do i remove it????

you can remove the installation of gaim by doing a make uninstall

Mmmmm. Go download Kmess. Thats what I use. and its msn protocal compliant.
