Need Help understanding how User's work.
 

Greetings all Magnificent Linux Genius',

Hey Guys, and Gals, I'm in need of a little advice, I recently installed Slackware v.12. Its probably too much for a newbie but oh well. Whenever I insert a cd or try to access the hard drive, I get the Error in Konquerer: "A security policy in place prevents this sender from sending this message to this recipient, see message bus configuration file (rejected message had interface "org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" member "Mount" error name "(unset)" destination "org.freedesktop.Hal")" I how do i know what user Im under? How do I give that user Privladges to access even an Inserted Compact Disk? And what the Heck is su? I Type it in under the Run Command console but nothing happens. Anyone that can take the time and help me, Much Oblige, God Bless, and May the force be with you.

It sounds like only Root has the correct permissions to mount your CD-rom drive, which is why KDE is throwing you errors when you try to mount it as a regular user.

If you take a look at the file "/etc/fstab" you will see an entry for your cdrom drive. Do a bit of googling and you will find how the fstab file works. Also search this site or google for the command "su" and its uses (in short it allows you to switch users, such as to the root user).

Thank you for ya'lls (yeah thats southern fer You Fellaws) help, I got to the etc/fstab file, but i cant figure out how to edit it...Laymens Terms My friends...about su...i will continue to indulge in Google.

Okay, your first mistake is consigning yourself to newbie-land ;)

Slackware 12 is not too much for a newbie; how else are you going to
learn? Slackware is an excellent distro with plenty of
beginner-friendly documentation (Slackbook), so dive in!

As far as understanding users: you're always logged in under the
user you logged in as, however there are processes and devices that
are run under different users. This is a groups (as in /etc/group)
issue; add yourself to video, cdrom, plugdev and a few other groups

I have had a lot of success just entering the exact error message into
Google and seeing what I come up with.

Well, I totally agree on the "How will you learn if you use a simple Distro?" I think they should rename Ubuntu "Windows Junior, with a linux Swing to it" anyhoo....thanks for the advice, just having a bit of a hard time trying to figure out how this distro works...every minute of its fun though...sometimes frustrating, but whenever I start quoting quotes in Binary and people look at me strange at a family get together.....its well worth it.
