ATI's drivers are on their website. Included are instructions on how to install them.

Beware, however, of these two things.

1. ATI makes really bad Linux drivers.
2. I don't think they work with Suse 9.1 anyway. It has the 2.6 kernel, and ATI never released a driver for that.

i installed the drivers which ati's homepage provides, following the instructions. The result was a failure. Linux would start with resolution 640x480. i thought it was ok, but when i tried to change the resolution to 1280x1024 , i found out that the ONLY resolution i could choose was 640x480.... i found a faq that gives instructions for radeon 9800 pro. i think it must be the same. i am a bit afraid thow to install ati drivers again, because i am still TOO newbie for this.

Does the system boot, but won't load X, or will the system not boot?

Nothing in particular looks wrong with the instructions you linked to, although I myself have never had to patch the drivers manually, much less edit *.c files, so I can't vouch for that.

Did you follow the steps exactly? Did you get any error messages during the process? What is the error on which X is failing?
