Need help setting up internet connection

I tried to set up an internet connection on red hat linux, but it didn't work mozilla or whatever you call it won't display webpages not even yahoo.com or google. It says that it's connected but it doesn't seem to be. I'm dual booting with XP and I have a Generic soft56K dial up modem and a Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC card.

Any suggestions on what to do to get a connection?

Check whether ppp0 interface is running by typing 'ifconfig' in a terminal. If that's the case then check the connection by using a ping to a valid IP address (google = 216.239.59.99) if that is not working, check the IP addresses in your /etc/resolve.conf file (which should be the dns of your ISP)

Hope this helps,
