Need help partitioning and mounting my second hd

OK, I just installed Unbuntu warty warthog RC on my first hd. I was able to mount my second hd (ntfs) and transfer my backup files to my first hd. Then I used cfdisk to partition my second hd to a single "Linux" partition (whatever that means). I, however, was not able to mount this hd, after partitioning. I keep getting the error:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdb1,
or too many mounted file systems
The command that I was using was:
mount -t [fs] /dev/hdb1 /mnt/hdb
I tried specififying several different fs types, there (ext2/3, auto, etc.).
Yes, I've got root privilages, yes, I unmounted the drive first, yes, /mnt/hdb/ exists.
Also, what fs, specifically, does cfdisk mean by "Linux"? If it's not ext3, how can I partition to ext3 (I'd prefer to use that, so it matches my first hd)?

Thanks in advance for any help.

You need to format the partition. To format an ext3 filesystem:

mke2fs -j /dev/hdb1

See man pages for mkfs, mke2fs for additional info.

A linux partition is a partition with the id of 0x83.
