Well, I should say that I too am a linux n00b, but as such I recently went through installing Mandrake 10.0 on my IBM Thinkpad and I had a similar problem. I was using the Mandrake installtion wizard (just installing from CDs, not building my own kernel) and for me it was just a matter of choosing the right screen resolution and video driver during that step of the configuration during install. I know it's not great advice, but maybe try playing with that? I eventually found a combination of options what worked for me....

check your /etc/inittab to make sure it's set to 5..
or even easier boot disk 1 choose upgrade, after it rebuilds rpm database and checks everything out you will be back at the configuration screen you were at during install. Check everything during screen setup, there is a test button there...USE IT!

i've done that and it seems there was no configuration that is working
and also i already set the etc/inittab to 5

any suggestion?
