Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

need help learning Linux...if any one can point me in a right directions
i need to learn Linux to get in to the job i am applying for. newbie. need a how to guide for Linux ( red hat, Ubuntu). where can i download the software and practice some things..
any help appreciated.
You'll have to pay for Redhat to download it - CentOS is a free version. Ubuntu has several flavours (kubuntu, etc.) but the Ubuntu download page is here.
You don't say what sorts of tasks you want to learn - can you give us some more info about the job tasks?
A good general guide is rute - I'm sure others will have preferred tutorial sites as well. The more specific you can make your questions, the more specific the answers will be. Do you have somewhere you can install the software (virtual machine, physical box) yet?
Go to Distrowatch and you will be spoilt for choice with about 80 zillion (ok, I exaggerate) different distros to choose from. You can start by burning a few LiveCD's and playing around with them until yo get the feel of things and develop a preference for one or another distro.

Hi, welcome to LQ.org, first.
You could try http://bit.ly/TAselfassess, if for a place to practice with Linux, TrueAbility has some helpful hands-on modules for free, so you could have a shot and see on real examples how to work with it.
The last post before yours was posted a long time ago so I don't think the OP is still monitoring this thread.

Hi. I also say Distrowatch (live, virtual machines (VM,) installers) but keep in mind most (if not all) can have different desktop environments (DE) and\or window managers (WM.) The second link in my signature for more... best wishes and have fun.

The way I learned about Linux was to use it daily as my operating system. If you use it (rather than trying to study it) I think that will force you to learn by experience.
Ok, but maybe he will receive mail notification.. Or someone else will find this useful.
Or maybe the OP will also realize that you've posted 9 different times, and SEVEN of them link to the same site, and figure out you're spamming LQ. The only two threads that don't point to that site are your introduction post, and the one here saying he'll get an email notification.
