need help installing xrender

my ultimate goal is to get gtk+-2.6.4 installed......4 hours later and 10 different libraries and i'm now I'm stuck at xrender....

Here is the error I receive:

Code:
checking if libtool supports shared libraries... yes
checking whether to build shared libraries... yes
checking whether to build static libraries... yes
checking whether -lc should be explicitly linked in... no
creating libtool
checking for X... no
configure: error: X is required, but it was either disabled or not found.
any help is greatly appreciated.

You need to have X-server installed for Gtk. I think there is a hacked version for the framebuffer but standard version won't do that.
