need help installing nvidia video drivers for compiz fusion

i just installed fedora core 8. im trying to make compiz fusion work, and i need to install nvidia drivers. im new to linux, so im still trying to find my way around it. according to this http://www.howtoforge.com/compiz-fus...eforce-fx-5200, it says i can use the add/remove software utility to install the drivers using livna, and installing kmod-nvidia and xorg-x11-drv-nvidia. i get errors after trying to install them, which says

xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-96xx conflicts with xorg-x11-drv-nvidia
Missing Dependency: kernel-x86_64 = 2.6.23.8-63.fc8 is needed by package kmod-nvidia-2.6.23.8-63.fc8
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia conflicts with xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-96xx

and every time i try enabling desktop effects, it says it cant with no error, i assume because of the lack of drivers. anyone know what im doing wrong?

The GeForce FX 5200 use the 196.09 driver with the latest kernel 2.6.23.14-107.fc8. The 96xx driver is for older cards. Open the Add/Remove Software utility and browse the list and uncheck the 96xx driver stuff and check the 196.09 one and update to the latest kernel. You should also make sure you have "compiz-fusion-icon" and "emerald" checked too.

i have a geforce 8800 gts, so it would be the newer ones, right?
i tried installing the newest kmod and xorg packages, but i got this:
Missing Dependency: kernel-x86_64 = 2.6.23.8-63.fc8 is needed by package kmod-nvidia-2.6.23.8-63.fc8
where can i get that?

I use the 32bit and get my nvidia packages from Livna so I don't know what's available for 64 bit from the repo.

can i use the 32 bit drivers? how can i tell if the driver is installed and working?

Well, I am very new to Linux.....but I had some troubles installing nVidia drivers also. Best thing I did was download the latest from nVidia's website..follow their directions to install. I had to shut down the graphical interface (xserver I guess?) by typing init3 at the terminal root. It then let me install the drivers...kind of did it's own thing. I then rebooted, or typed init5 to get back into everything and saw the nVidia logo pop up quickly. That's how you know, when you see the logo.
At least it worked for me...I also had an older Geforce card.

every time i try to use su -c 'yum install kmod-nvidia', i always get the same error:

Error: xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-96xx conflicts with xorg-x11-drv-nvidia
Error: xorg-x11-drv-nvidia conflicts with xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-96xx

this is on a fresh install! how could i have those old drivers already? in YUM, it doesnt have them as installed. what gives?

You would have had to of installed and enabled the Livna or another 3rd party repo to get the nvidia drivers as they do not come with a "fresh install" , somewhere along the way you have chose to install those packages.

You could use the Add/Remove Software as suggested.

I also have just done a fresh install of F8, and have Definitely Not installed 3rd party nvidia drivers...yet, but I too get a similar error message when trying to do "yum install kmod-nvidia-legacy".
I can do an "rpm -q nvidia", and variations on that theme and no 3rd party drivers are seen by the package manager.
Something is wrong here, but I don't know what.
