need help installing java for mozilla 1.7.8 in debian

ok, i need help installing java. I know this has been posted many times, but i have spent many hours digging through the archives and old posts, and i have tried tons of stuff, but nothin works.

I am using mozilla 1.7.8, gnome, and debian 3.1 (sarge) with linux 2.4 as core.

I have tried using sun java's 1.3.1_18 version. I created a soft link in my mozilla plugins directory, and it doesn't work still.

Suggestions?

did you create the link in usr/lib/mozilla/plugins???

Here is my sym-link for mozilla:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 58 Jul 23 2005 libjavaplugin_oji.so -> /usr/java/jre1.5.0_02/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so*

remember to restart your browser session after creating the link...

yeah, the link is in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

i noticed that your link is directed to [bunch of stuff]/ns7 but in my java directory the only ones there are ns4 and ns600. The ns600 has libjavaplugin_oji.so and the other one only has javaplugin_oji.so

do i need to get a more updated version of java?

EDIT: dld 1.5.0_06 from sun java website, works now. thanks d00d
