Need help installing FTP server

ok, I've been driving myself crazy. I just want to install an FTP server so I can use my linux computer as a server. I've tried using Samba and what not. I thought I installed an FTP server using the package manager, but I can't find anything. Can someone help me get an FTP server going?

Ok I'm going to be nice and respond to this.
1. what distribution are you using
2. what ftp server are you trying to install
3. Samba is not an ftp server

Regarding 1 & 2 you most likely will either never get an answer to this type of post without these or worse get some really stern posts about how to post. People are not mind readers and are not going to start guessing at what is you have and are trying to install.

Hi, you could try making a FTP server using:ProFTPD

It's a nice, and "easy" to setup FTP server.

With this howto you can even maintain it in a graphical enviroment.

My bad I thought I put the distro. I'm using Mandrake.

I can't remember what I was doing... so I don't know. I'm trying to install pure-ftp right now.

I'm trying to use a command driven interface, so I only use the x-window to install things easier.

I was playing with Samba, but gave up because I couldn't connect with my other computer.

Search within your yast/yum tool to find ftp servers. Vsftpd is a great ftp server, whenever I install FTP that is what I use.

In any case, no GUI is good. Whatever tool Mandriva uses (I think yast?) you just search for ftp servers and install them.

As already mentioned, samba is not a ftp server. It is a local network file sharer, major difference.

Peace,
JimBass

Yeah, I know Samba isn't an FTP server. I was trying to share files at first then I decided I'd be better off using an FTP server.

I'll try searching for it.

Well I somehow managed to figure out Samba... I don't know what I did, but it's working now. Thank you everyone who helped.

The FTP server I use is ProFTP. Check to see if your package manager has it in one of its repositories. Also, to ease the configuration of ProFTP, install the GProFTP package, which is a GTK+2 based configuration interface.
