need help installing fonts and shutting down linux box

i can't managed to install the ms true type fonts. i've read a few tutorials but can't follow them. i've downloaded the cabextract-0.6-1.i386.rpm, installed it and have the msttcorefonts-1.3-4.spec file but have no idea what i'm supposed to do from there. i also need to change the fonts that my desktop uses. i think i already have fonts for it installed but don't know how to change them.

i'm also having problems shutting down the pc. when i log out then hit shutdown it closes everything down ok except i get the message "no way to disable net traffic" and "warning... md recovery thread got woken up" then it shuts off the pc but 20 secs later it starts up again.
i'm using redhat9 with the kde desktop.

i've tried following another tutorial. http://jetblackz.nabaza.org/Configur...asedFonts.html i've done everything it says in the 'Installing Core Fonts' part but am stuck on the next part 'Enabling New TrueType Fonts for X'
i forgot to say that i tried to shut down my pc by typing "shutdown now" in the terminal, which did shut it down without restarting it again, only i got a message on the next start up saying the pc shut down uncleanly the least time and started scanning my files for errors.
