Question need help for senior project Ping address and utilization

im doing a final project for school and i need to explain the uses of pinging and relate it to real world applications,

i can ping webservers no problem but how do you ping other platforms using internet capabilities such as iphones or smartphones im confused on what is considered the phones ID on the network it is connected to. also, the ping request return back the size of bytes returned and sent to packets, how do you use the time it takes those packets to reach host and come back to determine location.

Thanks for any help

You can only determine how far away it is by dividing the round trip time by 2... but that only works in 1-D.
To discover location you need at least 2 different towers for a 2-D location.
The more towers in range, the more accurate you can get; this is because its a general (spherical front) radiation, not a LASER.
