need help for internet access
 

I have no idea how to install my Linksys DSL router for my DSL access. I put the cd in the cd drive and it wont install.

It wont let me install via exe.

I dont know how else to install. Ive never used linux. I just installed it and would like my internet access. I am on my laptop now (windows xp) and really want to learn linux and how to use it.

you can't use .exe files in linux bro, if you have access to the net via your laptop then linux should work as well. What model of linksys do you have? Is it the Cable/DSL models or is it dsl specific?


*note* I took a look at linksys's web site and there appears to be no Dsl only routers.. in that case it should be a matter of software configs... and the .exe setup files should not matter.

I've used the BEFSR41 and WAP11 with Linux and had no setup issues... try to direct connect your linux box to your internet and restart your box to see if it pulls an ip addy from you isp

Linksys WRT54G is the model I have..... I have never done anything in Linux before... so if someon could baby step me through the process, that would be great. :o)

Another weird thing though. I am able to use this laptop wirelessly through my linksys wrt54g, through my linux system. Even if my desktop is off, I can still use my internet connection through my laptop. So, linux should see my linksys router I am sure. Correct?

This is how I have my DSL connection established.

My phone cord is connected to my Verizon dsl box, next I have a ethernet cable going from my Verizon box to my Linksys WRT54G broadband router. Then, another ethernet cable going from my router to my desktop. It all worked perfect in Windows.

My laptop has a Linksys WPC54G notebook adapter (for wireless connection). WEP is enabled, and like I said, the internet connection works excellent on my laptop.

The only problem I have right now is getting my desktop to use the DSL as well. :o)

I have chosen Suse Linux for a number of things I would like to do. I obviously will be taking a class on enhansing my knowledge in Linux.

I want to use my DSL to be used by other people (Wireless Community Networking), also would like to set up a webserver on my linux system (just one website, not a webhost).

Just FYI on what I plan to do. :o)

Now, in your linux box what brand/model nic card are you using ?

Also when you run lspci command (as root) does it show your nic card?

ok... I am an idiot mind you. :o) I dont know how to do the commands except by clicking on the mouse (right click) and choosing Run Command.

I ran the command lspci and it didnt show anything. The dialog box just closed. I went into YaST and it shows my network card.

Yea, if you open a console window and su (type in root password) and then type in lspci it should spit out something like this...

That's from my main box, we're looking for something that says Ethernet controller... I want to make sure your box at least can see the physical card sitting in the slot. If it does we'll deal with drivers etc.. after we confirm that.
