need help configuring sound properly

i have a sound blaster audigy 2 ZS and i cannot get it to put out sound. i think i have the correct drivers because when i plug headphones into the card i can get sound. now here is were the problem begins, my speaker system uses the digital out and would only work in that spot (in windows) on top of that when i boot up i get an error message that i believe has something to do with the card but it goes by to fast and i dont know how to check anything from the command line seeing as i dont know any commands

If you want to view the output of the kernel during the boot process, you can look in the file /var/log/dmesg. You can view the file with the command:
Code:
less /var/log/dmesg

ok i opened that log file but i couldnt find anything that mentioned anything related to the sound card.
also something that a friend pointed out is that somewere there is an option to switch the card from analog to digital and vice versa. i was thinking i should try that but i need to know the commands
