Need help combining MPG's

I've searched the threads many times and found very little on this subject a few week ago I found a post from MasterC and using the cat command which worked for him but I couldn't do it can, somebady explain it to me step by step please?

MPEG files are different, so you can not take another file and append it to another file. You have to decode all the MPEG files and write them to an raw AVI file. Then encode the huge file into MPEG. Encoding back into MPEG will make the video very distorted.
