need help booting the system - duplicate /etc/inittab entries?

I am having trouble booting the system normally as it tries to activate all sevices(for example eth0) twice and the login screen is all weird too as its loaded twice. One error message that I can see is about dupllicate entries in /etc/inittab. I have no idea how that can be as I didnt make any changes to the system since the last time I used it. One major problem that i am having is that its not letting me login as root or any user on the system. It keeps coming back as 'login incorrect'.
Any idea on what happened here and how to fix it?
Thanks

exact error messages are:

/etc/inittab: 'Duplicate ID field 'id'
/etc/inittab: 'Duplicate ID field 'su'
/etc/inittab: 'Duplicate ID field '10'
/etc/inittab: 'Duplicate ID field '16'

and a couple more. Funny part is that I never made any changes to the system and it was running fine. Its a vector linux system.
thanks
