Need Help

I've been wanting to try out Linux for a while but I've yet to get any to really work. I've tried multiple live Cd's, Ubuntu, Fedora, openSUSE, and DSL. None of them worked on my PC except DSL. The rest froze just before starting up. My computer is an IBM Netvista 2.4 ghz P4 with 512mb ram. Any help would be appreciated.

This is your 1st post - welcome to LQ.
You seem to be in an unusual situation... what you experience is usual where there is insufficient RAM. You have enough RAM installed, perhaps some of it is broken?

Which netvista do you have?

... the A20 series is great with linux.

Some other people's experience with netvista machines

You will find you'll get a better response to your posts if you first read the rules:

Thanks for the quick response. I believe it's a NETVISTA M42 MT P4/2400. I'm not completely sure though. I got that by googling the system model from dxdiag and it was about the same. Thanks for pointing to the rules, I'll try to keep those in mind. I looked over the post about netvista and it didn't really seem to apply to my situation but thanks for linking me to it. I forgot to mention before that I put a new graphics card in my PC but I don't think that would keep it from booting at all, because I believe I had the same problem before installing it. One thing that I noticed that was strange that was my keyboard was completely locked up when it would freeze, as in no lights and whatnot but the optical mouse's light was still lighted up.
