need guru help with debian packages please

OK check this..I upgraded from sarge to sid with synaptic it listed out what it would do so i was aware...it was going to remove evolution which I dig...no big deal I figure I will just reinstall after upgrade...well phhht on me that wont work unmet dependencies and wont install this because of that etc..I felt like I was back in dependency hell which is way not cool...ok so I use synaptic to delete the config files or so I thought....I decide to switch my repositories back to sarge and attempt to install evolution again..boom it goes easy and I have evolution again..not only that BUT I still have all the settings, email and contacts..so how is this?? synaptic uninstalls evolution..than I use synaptic to remove config..yet when I reinstall all is there..its like it never was removed....also if i wish to completely remove a program/package how would i go about it as synaptic obviously dont do it??

When you remove a package the user configurations won't be touched. Think about it - you wouldn't want all your documents removed just because you uninstalled your word processor, right? That could be catastrophic to a lot of people. :)

The Debian package management system never touches user files, so even if you remove an application and the global configuration files the users' private configuration and data will be kept intact.

ok that makes sense...and if I wanted to remove completely I would just delete the user config??

Yes, to completely remove anything associated with Evolution you would have to remove your ~/evolution directory, which contains all your personal settings and data. I don't recommend it. :)
