for home use, I have never used any anti-virus software on gnu/linux

In over 20 years me neither, except to run scans for families microcougheds.

Modern hackers won't easily reveal their activities. I prefer to be a bit on the chicken side and use a bit more security.

Security isn't one thing. It is many choice and tasks that you can easily use. Learn how to use them and it should be easier to protect your system and data.

You can require a password to be typed in each and everytime your system boots and in addition to that you can also encrypt the HDD and the /home directory if you'd like.
If you decide to utilize encryption "make sure" you write down the passphrase or you'll be locked out.
