Need backup software recommendation
I would like to make a backup of my /home directory onto a NAS device, and have whatever software is used for the purpose update (new and changed files) every night, or perhaps everytime there is a period of inactivity. Any suggestions for a GUI package that will do this?
I do not want a complete backup each time, just the new or changed files. Also prefer software that backs up to a mirror of the original (i.e., uncompressed folders and files) Using 10.4 TIA |
you might take a look at dropbox

I don't know of any good GUI applications that do what you want but I've been very happy with rdiff-backup as a backup solution that is a clear backup with increments.

rysnc should do the trick. Once the initial backup is made, it can do incremental backups (I've been setting it up for the first time tonight and it's busy backing up stuff even as I type).
There's a graphical frontend called Back in Time which I heard about on the Sourcetrunk podcast. |
Hello Odyssey1942,
I don't know about a guitool for backups. I'm using flexbackup and anacron. flexbackup is a perlscript which allows for full-, differential- and incremental backup http://www.edwinh.org/flexbackup/ . anacron is similar to cron but more suitable for PCs which don't run day and night like servers http://anacron.sourceforge.net/ . For example one can configure that once a week a full backup is performed and daily an incremental backup. With anacron one can configure a job to be started (as an example) 10 minutes after the PC is started. Markus |
If a web interface works for you as a GUI, then BackupPC might do the trick. You can see some screen shots of the web interface here: http://backuppc.sourceforge.net/info.html#screenShots. It's maybe more than what you need, but, as soon as you say GUI, you're asking for a more complex piece of software. The simplest tools most often do not have GUI's.

I read this a few days ago: Deja Dup Review

I use rsnapshot which is a wrapper around rsync.
