Question Nautilus Extention Woe's

Ok, im a Ubuntu Hardy 64bit user...

Have just started to encounter a problem...

I have extention issues...

I used to be able to open nautilus - right click on a tar.gz file and choose option "extract here", seems its dissappeared, i've tried reinstalling file-roller, and archive-manager - hasnt fixed the problem..

This issue hasn't just effected tar.gz files.. also effected NEW avi files and jpg files...

I've tried selectng which ap they should open with, and that seems to be a problem aswell...

e.g. if i select a avi file and tell it to be opened with vlc - that also seems to set the new jpg files to opened with it aswell...

im completely stumped and not keen on reinstalling ubuntu ..

remeber this only happens with new files, all my old AVI/JPG open as they should when double clicked..

any ideas anyone.?
