Nautilius- file types and programs
 

Hi all,
I am uable to associate acrobat reader as the default application for viewing all pdf files. I know it has to do with the File type andd programs but am not sure how to set it right.

In Nauilius when i right click on a pdf file, i have the options Open with - other application and other viewer. What's the difference between these two ? and what should i set so as to open the file in acrobat when the file is double clicked?

OK, I hadn't used Nautilus, so I had to give it a quick spin first.
Right click on the file to bring up the contect menu.
Select Open With Other Application near the bottom.
Single click on the program you want for the default in the list.

Click the Modify button

Select the "Use as default ..." line.

I don't know what distro you're using or if GNOME in Red Hat 9 has the same preferences as with another distro

But, for GNOME and Red Hat 9

Main Menu -> Preferences -> File types and programs

There you can change the default app to open a type of file.

I am using Redhat 9.0 with Nautilus. When i right click a pdf file in the Nautilus window and choose 'Open With -- Other Application -- ' the 'Open with other applications' window pops up. Here ggv is the only listed application. I click 'Go there' button under 'File Types and Programs' and get to the 'Edit file Type' dialog. Here i chose under Actions, Viewer Component = None, and Default action = Custom. Program to run = acroread.

When i go back and double clik a pdf file, it takes like 30 seconds(i have 512MB ram,athlon 2600) and then opens a empty ggv window.

Am i missing any steps???

See my post above. I changed my pdf viewr to xpdf that way.

Atlast it works now. I tried that earlier too, somehow it did not work then. Maybe i needed to relogin after making those changes. This time around I did that and it seems to have set acrobat as the default application.
It opens acrobat with a terminal window. I tried unchecking the 'open in terminal' option, but that does not take effect. Will try again later and see if it works.

After several attempts I managed to figure what my mistake was.
I had acrobat installed in /usr/local/ and so in the file type asociations dialog i entered /usr/local/Adobe5/bin/acrobat (the command I use to open acrobat from the terminal window). However, i failed to notice that this was gettin reset to just 'acrobat'. Since there was no 'acrobat' in my path, this was not working and double clicking a pdf file resulted in opening with the next possible viewer which was ggv. When i had 'run in terminal' checked, it worked fine and the file opened in acrobat along with a terminal window.

Now, I have created a link to the /usr/local/Adobe5/acrobat script in /usr/bin and simply put acrobat in the file associations dialog. Everything works as expected !!!

i have a similar problem...

i am mainly concerned with movie files (my tasteful erotic art collection). if i open up nautilus as root, i can open the files in xine with no problem. if i open nautilus as me, i get the coveted "no program associated with this file type" error. if i say, "ok, i want to associate xine" it says ok, but still gives me the error. if i go into the association menu again, the association is gone.

sounds to me like a permissions issue, but any reasons why and/or how to fix it?
