Nasty looking fonts in firefox

Hi all, had this problem for ages and maybe someone can tell me how they fixed it. On some sites (like slashdot) most of the fonts look pretty bad, like bold, italic and not very nice to read, ive tried the preferences in firefox but they dont seem to change anything. Anybody know how to get around this?

Any help appreciated.

Did you try loading some of Microsofts Core TTF fonts?

Firstly, thanks for the help. I got up to:

6. Build the binary rpm with this command:

$ rpmbuild -bb msttcorefonts-1.3-4.spec
Is there an equivalent to that command on slackware?
