Name of the download manager for xfce4?

Kernel 2.6.21.5, GNU/Linux (Slackware 12.0).
Xfce 4.4
Firefox 2.0.0.4

Hi:
When browsing the web, maybe I end up in a link to download some stuff through the internet. When I click a window opens prompting me (desktop environment= xfce) what to do with the file. Who is in charge of the download procedure from my side of the cable? I'll assume he is the download manager, a term new to me up to recently. The question, then, is that of the title. Any feedback will be welcome.

What happens when you click a link in a browser depends exclusively on that browser, and how you configured it.

If you use firefox -just a random example- then firefox will do whatever it's configured to do with that kind of url, depending on its mimetype. That can be open the file on a pdf viewer, open a new tab showing the html page the link points to, showing the image on a tab or using an external viewer, or asking you what to do with the file if it's of a type it doesn't know how to handle.

My fault, the web browser is Firefox 2.0.0.4. Allow me to edit post #1 heading to point out this fact. My question is in connection with kget, an applicattion xfce should[?] be able to run. kget is a download manager and I am trying to use it.

I should have been more explicit. The scenario is downloading things like programs or a .torrent file, you see? And I was wrong in post #1. After saying firefox I want to download the file, a window opens showing the download progress (transfer rate, bytes downloaded). It is to this window that I was really referring.

Well, I've never done this myself, but it should be possible. There seem to be useful results in the net about this:

http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=fir...UTF-8&fr=moz35

Most people however either use the firefox download manager (I don't remember whether firefox 2.x had that) or an extension from here:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...ad-management/

Either way, I think that your problem could by solved by upgrading to a newer distro. I tell you that because:

A) maybe the firefox 3.x download manager is enough for you
B) most up-to-date extensions will not work on 2.x

An old web browser together with such an old (very old, from mid-2007) kernel is a security risk.

Thank you for your advices on security. In fact, it is my machine the fundamental piece out of date (80686 at 760MHz, 256MB RAM). So, I must keep on with my old software. And thanks for your generous help of course.

The whole thing originated in a atempt to use Magnet Link instead of normal torrents. According to wikipedia Kget manages them from kget 2. However, I just have seen my version is v0.8.5. Very stupid on my part!

On the other hand I downloaded utorrent for linux and I am reading the docs. Little is said so I'll compile it and see what happens with magnet links. Any ways there must be hundreds of linux apps that handle magnet link. I must keep searching or open a new thread. Regards.

I understand, still, you should consider using an up to date OS, even if you have to choose lighter components. But, I don't want to deviate from the main purpose of the thread. If you are interested you can research about your viable options on a new thread or look yourself around the net. But, in the worst case, you could still upgrade firefox to 2.0.0.20, at least.

I know nothing about magnet links, however, from what I recall the kget versions in kde 3.x (which you are probably using) is not able to handle such protocol. The nerwer kget versions require kdelibs 4.x, which are out of the question for both your OS and your hardware, unfortunately.

Probably, but I can't help with that :)

Well then, kget remains as an atractive alternative to firefox built-in download manager. And one of your links should lead me in the way to use it. About Magnet Link, I think I'll can get along with the traditional way to handle p2p. Thanks for your time and sorry for the delay. Regards.
