N00B with dual booting queries

First I'd like to say hi, this is my first post.

I'm may be a newly converted sinner :( having always used Windows in the past.

I'm buying a pc in a months time. it already has Windows XP Longhorn on it (i believe). what is the Linux equivilant (anything that runs well on a AMD64, please take into account I'm new to linux.)

yep, you can dual boot basicly anything.
Suse was good for me in the beginning. Other people might tell you to go for Mandriva.
If you don't want to get wet feet in the beginning try a live cd such as: knoppix.
As always: do a backup of the files you keep in windows before trying a dual boot.
Suse does auto-partitioning and recognises your windows (& keeps it alive :))

There is no equivalency between XP and some particular version of Linux--Windows and Linux are fundamentally different and evolve on different paths.

For a first distro, I recommend picking any of the free ones at random--you will almost certainly try several before settling down.

Dual-boot? At my best time (hmmm, bout3 months ago) I had a _quad-boot_! I had WindoesXP, Slackware 10.2, FreeBSD 6.0-RELEASE and BeOS 5 PE MAX! Edition.
