MySQL Setup problem

Can someone please help me get out of a mess. Under Ubuntu 11.10 I installed the LAMP package. Came up with the Apache welcome. I then installed Webmin all was well. Then disconnected the server box started it up and worked under Webmin.

Later I tried to log into MySQL and Webmin asked for my login. It would not accept it as root or robert.

This is where I stuffed things up. I edited the debian.cnf file replaceing the root login with my username and password. I later see that this file on it's header says DO NOT TOUCH.

I then read the LAMP instructions for setting up MySQL and as I was accessing from another machine I set the bind address of the server 192.168.16.

But nothing else I could do I was unable to set root password and there I am stuck.

How can I repair this? Perhaps if I have a new debian.cnf things way work.

Robert..

Slow down here a second... You need to roll back your debian.cnf. The root password for MySQL is completely different.

Follow these steps for resetting your MySQL root password:

dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/resetting-permissions.html

Thank you for your very quick reply unfortunately I am not getting far. I am trying to do thin under the Webmin command like.

> /etc/init.d/mysql stop
Rather than invoking init scripts through /etc/init.d, use the service(8)
utility, e.g. service mysql stop

Since the script you are attempting to invoke has been converted to an
Upstart job, you may also use the stop(8) utility, e.g. stop mysql
> stop mysql
stop: Unknown instance:

Hi me again, it seems to be working now but I did not get the responses from what I was following. Anyway I have set a password in Webmin. Webmin just logs in to MySQL without and further login password request but as long as its working and safe I am happy.
Thanks a lot for all your help.

The commands you are issuing are shell commands, are you able to establish an SSH or terminal connection to the server?

The "service" command refrenced is /sbin/service. Try /sbin/service mysqld status or start.
