mysql processes

Can anyone educate me on a 'newbie' question I have about mysql (v4.0.20)?

After I start mysql (under root) I can see (doing: ps aux) a running (root owned) process for mysqld_safe. Additionally I have upto 10 mysqld processes running (owned by 'nobody').
1. What are all these processes doing?
2. How can I config then (ie reduce the number to say 3) & would this serve any purpose?
(The database is running on an old PC with only 64meg RAM which I am setting up as a webserver on my home network, it won't be accessed by more than two client PC's at any one time.)
I have checked my.cnf (am unamended copy of the default my-small.cnf) but can find no reference to a maximum processes variable, either in this file, or in the mysql documentation.)

Linux Distro = Slackware 10.0
mysql = 4.0.20
