Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

Usually in Ubuntu-based Systems, I install mysql by the below command :
apt-get install mysql-server
It works fine but Today in User's sytem ( Ubuntu-10.4 ) based system, it causes the below error at the end :
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
postgresql-8.4: Depends: postgresql-client-8.4 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: postgresql-common (>= 104~) but it is not going to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).
There is a unwanted postgresql-8.4 package listed below :
I tried to purge it but I cann't succeed resulting in below error :
root@ws40-man-lin:~# dpkg --purge postgresql-8.4
dpkg: error processing postgresql-8.4 (--purge):
Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should
reinstall it before attempting a removal.
Errors were encountered while processing:
postgresql-8.4
root@ws40-man-lin:~#
I tried to install mysql from third-party source code but it results in error condition :
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
postgresql-8.4: Depends: postgresql-client-8.4 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: postgresql-common (>= 104~) but it is not going to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).
root@ws40-man-lin:~#
Please help me how to overcome or troubleshoot this problem.
You have issues with dependencies in PostgreSQL installation. If you want to install PostgreSQL, you could download it as a deb package and install it. I have it installed this way without dependency issues.
