Question MySQL install trouble on slackware 9.1

Hi there,
I'm totally in the dark here, I have just installed slackware 9.1 in the past week, it is running on a p3 500. 512 mb ram. i am very dissapointed with how it is running in kde. it is slow, choppy etc. But thats not the real issue or why i am writing
I am trying to install MySQL 4.0.18. this has it's dependancies as i am finding out... such as fileutils, sh-utils, /bin/sh and /usr/bin/perl.

Thats ok, i am not a complete idiot (only a little) i went searching for these packages. I found fileutils but did it install? no i just untarred it, I must say it is very challenging to install this as it has an install command in the newly created directory but what now? what do i do with all that stuff?
The sh-util is almost impossible to find and how do i satisfy the /bin/sh and /usr/bin/perl requirements? Do i just create those directories? (i don't think so.)

Didn't they think of this when developing slackware 9? I mean we are all the way upto nine right? I have worked in RH9 and i am no expert in any distro, i switched to slack because i was up for these kind of challenges but it just seems to be fighting me EVERY step of the way~!

Question (finally)

Is there ONE place where i can download MySQL WITH all its dependancies or maybe just those dependancies in one place...surely someone has thought of this!?

Very frusterated, challenged (which is good) but VERY frusterated.

all the dependancies you need should be on the slack install disk. if you do a full install, mysql installs, so it works out just fine. try to find them and install them from there. If that fails, try swaret (, and do a

swaret --update
swaret --upgrade

to install pretty much every package for slack, or if you dont want that, just use

swaret --install mysql

and it will find and download mysql, along with all its dependancies for you.

Thanks for replying, i have found mysql in slackware, i have read the read me and i think successfully installed it. I ran a test and it did not give me any errors. strange but this time when i followed the read me installation instructions and untarred the 4.0.18 package everything went smoothly. Anyway guess i just should've looked around in slack a bit further, becasue i did choose full/all packages on install. Thanks though because you got me thinking in the right direction.

now on with learning mysql.

You might also want to take a look at for additional information (chrooting, etc)
