my Ubuntu 8.10 UE is very slow.

When I was running 8.04 everything was as quick as could be.
I would have VBox, multiple firefox windows and vlc or Rhythmbox running all at the same time with no problem. Now with 8.10 Ultimate Edition installed it struggles in even the simplest of multitasking.

Are there just too many applications installed in UE?
My syestem monitor shows only 40% CPU usage at very most.
I am not sure where to start.

AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+
3175 MiB of swap memory.
I am not sure what other specs you would want.

By system monitor I meant the AWN applet that shows CPU% usage.
