my sql to use less proecesses during a dump?

Is there a way to make mysqldump or a script run with less resourses.
I have a script that runs a dump

mysqldump -p$DB_PWD -u $DB_USER -h $DB_HOST $DB_NAME > /data-backup/$DB_NAME-$MYDATE.sql

How can I have that command or script use less resources. When this script gets kicked off via cron the system get bogged down quite a bit.
