My speakers do not work

My speakers are not working. Headphones also seem not to work. Both worked previously. I don't know when they stopped working.

I followed directions here:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting

try running alsamixer from a console. could be as simple as a muted card.

Also, try booting to a Live CD of something or other and testing the audio with it. It the sound works under the Live CD, it's almost certainly a software problem. If it doesn't, you may have a hardware problem.

Try to check BIOS Setup maybe sound port is disable.

This application is too poorly written to be much use without further assistance. alsomixer comes up with a GUI with several vertical bars that appear to be either sliders or volume indicators.

The first bar is labelled "master" The GUI levels for this appear all the way to the top, but the top has a red color - without indication what the red means. At the bottom, is has "00" which would seem to indicate that it is off??

The second bar is labelled "master m" The GUI levels are completely blank, and the bottom has "MM"

The third bar is labelled "headphon" The GUI levels are all to the top (red), and the bottom says "00"

The fourth bar is also labelled "headphon" The GUI levels are MISSING!, and the bottom says "MM"

The fifth bar is labelled "PCM" THe GUI levels are in the middle (white), and the bottom says "00"

The sixth bar is labelled "line" The GUI levels are completely blank, and the bottom has "MM"

The seventh bar is labelled "line 3ac" The GUI levels are MISSING!, and the bottom says "MM"

The remaining bars are labelled "CD", "Mic", "Mic boost", "Mic selec", "phone", "aux", "mono outp", "external", and "stereo m1" Of these only CD has any GUI levels. The rest are either blank or missing.

The mouse doesn't seem to be able to control any of these. There is text on the app that says "F1 help" but F1 doesn't work at all. There is "get help online" on the help menu, but it brings up help for gnome terminal, and not for alsamixer

Thanks for the suggestion. It looks like the sound port is enabled (I'm not very good at BIOS)

00 means its On, the bar indicates the volume level, the colors just help articulate the level in a graphical way, so red is "high/max/loud"

MM is muted, that's probably our problem just arrow over to it and hit "m"

hit "m" to unmute and pres the up arrow to reach your desired value, if it doesn't move or is too slow hit the number keys 1-9 to indicate the desire percentage, 1-10% 2-20% and so on...

this should be fine but you can up it, PCM causally controls all volume for that card.

if your still having problems post the output from "amixer"

To clarify for anyone else reading this (like me), this really means "arrow," as in the arrows on the keyboard. The mouse does not work in this application.
