My sound and it's magic disappearing act

using an Audigy 2 ZS, and it was working just fine. booted into slack today, and I have no sound now. Kmix was showing that was using the VIA onboard AC97 sound instead for some reason, so I set it back to the Audigy, but still no go. logged out and reran alsaconf, and it said it did its thing, but I still have no sound. I know the sound card, speakers, and cable work since I was just playing audio in windows.

the only change I've made between sound working vs. not working is adding myself to the wheel group and unpounding the wheel line in visudo so I can use sudo. not getting sound under root either though, so I can't see that being the cause.

any ideas?

here is my lspci:

okay, I am back in slackware now, and the sound is working again. it's great and all, but I still don't know why this happened in the first place. I'll reply again if the sound disappears again.

okay, so I had sound all last night and today. was making some changes to fstab, using the gimp, installing ktorrent, etc. realized I needed to reboot for my timeout in lilo to get written, so did that... and now my sound is gone again. when I go into KMix, it has the VIA AC97 onboard sound selected instead of the Audigy, but I still don't get sound when I tell it to use the Audigy instead.

what information can I look at to determine what is stopping my sound from working?

Hi,
Did you try to disable the VIA AC97 through the BIOS ?
Maybe you should try and see what happens

Hi,

Just checked the BIOS and the AC97 is already disabled... so that's a bit confusing. Sounds working for now though, haha.
