My screen resolution has gone to hell overnight!

I went to bed last night and all was well, I turn my computer on again this afternoon and the resolution is 1024x768 when it should be 1280x1024, AND I cannot change it back! The original resolution setting is gone!! :banghead:

To top it off, the screen is jumping. Every few seconds the screen jumps. What the heck is going on?

Linux Mint 14, using gnome desktop.

well did you install updates ?
if so are you using a proprietary AMD/ATI or Nvidia driver ?
if so
then reinstall the ati .bin or nvidia .run

basically
what changed from one day to the next

Good news, maybe

Solved problem, but not sure what did it or if it's permanent.

I added an old xconf.xorg file, because there wasn't one. I then restarted the computer but nothing happened. I installed nvidia-current and nvidia-settings. I them logged out of x using ctrl+alt+f1 logged in as root and ran
Code:

nvidia-xconfig
it said that it created an xconf file. I restarted and logged back in, the opening title was very basic - just the words Linux Mint, and when I checked the file, it was the same one I had added. But now Nvidia-settings is acting right and no longer telling me that I am not using their driver. The old file shows an old nvidia card (7500) that I had been using when I created that file and nvidia-settings has detected the newer nvidia (8800) card that I am now using.

Should I remove the file I added to /etc/x11 and start over again or leave well enough alone? Right now the resolution and refresh are what they should be and my screen is no longer jumping, but I have no idea why it happened in the first place. I have not updated anything recently.

I was using what was onboard when I installed Linux mint 14.
Nothing, as far as I know, has changed for my system since yesterday. I haven't been asked to update anything in quite sometime. Although now, after installing the nvidia-settings and nvidia-current, I have updates waiting.

Where is nvidia .run and how would I reinstall it?

Since you did this

Code:

Although now, after installing the nvidia-settings and nvidia-current
you do not need the nvidia .run. That would have been a way to set up the drivers using a download from nVidia. You did it right installing the way you did for Mint.

Thank you! I'll mark this thread solved. :)
